I'm Janneke (pronounced "Yah-knee-ka"), and I'm six years old. I'm going to be giving up sweets for a whole month to raise money for wells and water pumps for children in Africa, because I want to help children who aren't as lucky as me. I don't think drinking muddy water is very nice, so I've decided to help.

UPDATE: Janneke went the entire 28 days without a single sweetie and is very proud of what she has achieved. We think rightly so!
The whole thing was Janneke's own idea, started off by a tantrum over an expensive toy she wanted and the resulting lecture from mum about being grateful for what you have. Janneke was astounded to learn that the toy she wanted could put three children in school for a month, and when we showed her charity websites as proof of this unbelievable fact, she was even more amazed at there being no clean water in some areas. She knows mum doesn't do well without a morning cuppa, and that clean water is a vital ingredient in tea so she decided to help the children with grumpy mummies. At first she wanted to empty her piggy bank, and we had to explain that £10 in pennies wouldn't help very much, but Janneke was determined to help somehow so we looked at fund raising ideas and she suggested giving up sweeties for a month.
A PARENTAL NOTE: Thank you very much to everyone who supported Janneke (even just the encouraging emails!!), and helped her learn the valuable lessons of generosity, the importance of people helping each other, and proven to her that even a little girl can make all the difference in the world.
