Project: Water Pumps / Water Wells
Target: £8000.00
Twelve year old Grace walks to the muddy water hole every
morning to collect water for her family. She gets out of her grass bed while it
is still dark and sets off along the mud trail. When she finally reaches the
water hole, she looks into the brown dirty water and remembers the stories she heard
about this water being unsafe. She tasted clean water once from the local shop.
Her family can’t afford that now since her father lost his job, so she
starts the long process of drawing water.
Each time she draws water, she has to
sit and wait for water to seep through the ground and the mud to settle before
she can collect more. According to the World Health Organization 1,200 million
people do not have access to safe drinking water? Their only water source is
often a hole in the ground which is unpredictable at best! People walk long
distances to fetch water which is likely to carry diseases such as cholera and
typhoid. Many children have even gone blind as a result of water-borne
diseases.
